Extension Activities for Yellowstone
After you finish your Angle of Repose Lab, you may choose an exploration from the following options. During the activity, record answers to questions on a sheet of paper to hand in when you are finished.
Yellowstone Microorganisms in Hot Water Activity
Yellowstone Web Scavenger Hunt
Yellowstone Hot Spot Online Activity
Geyser Quest
You may also watch a video about Life in Yellowstone by going to the J drive, looking in the 7th grade science folder. It's in a folder called videos. It's about 30 minutes, and very interesting! Should not be slow to stream, since I saved it on the local drive.

EarthCache Assessment
For your assessment, you will create an EarthCache for one of the sites you visit on our field trip.
To get started understanding this assignment, you need to know what an earth cache is. In short, it is a geologic point of interest, created by members of the geocaching community, which is designed to provide an educational field experience.
Your tasks for today are to...
Pick a partner you would like to work on this assessment with. You can earn an achievement badge by choosing someone you have NEVER worked with on a project before.
Visit EarthCache.org to find out what Earch Caches are,
Find examples of great Earth Caches (try searching for sites in Colorado, or the Grand Canyon, or other sites all over the world)
find out the criteria for making your own earth cache.
Make a plan for tomorrow. Will you take pictures? Record audio of the tour guides? Come with really great questions to ask your tour guides? Bring a GPS? Take detailed notes? Who will do which jobs?

Dinosaur Extensions for September 10
If you have passed your metric system test, you get to do an Exploration today. Explorations are short studies within a topic of your choosing, and include a report of your learning.
Your launch point today is: http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science/prehistoric-world.html You may explore anything you want, related to the topics on this page (geology, prehistoric life, fossils, dinosaurs, etc.). Your studies may take you away from this website, but please keep your study within the realm of geology and paleontology.
Your report can be either of the two following ideas:
1. On the left side of a sheet of paper, record the questions you want to find answers to, and on the right, record the activities or websites you visit, and the information you find. For example, you might wish to find out what kinds of plants lived during the time of the dinosaurs. Write this question on the left, and on the right, record what you learned, or where your questioning took you.
2. In paragraph form, summarize your activities and learning.

Choices for Nervous System Enrichment
Options:
1. If you have an ipad or iphone, you may find and download the free app "3D Brain". Explore the different parts of the brain and find their functions. Very cool!
2. Virtual Eye Dissection - at this website, you can do an animated tutorial to learn how the eye works, do a virtual eye dissection, or watch a video of an eye dissection.
3. Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery - This is one of those EdHeads activities you guys loved!
4. Nano Particles and Brain Tumors - Another EdHeads activity - this one is for grades 10 - 12. Kind of advanced, but interesting!
5. Learn all about the nervous system - this one is like the bones game some of you enjoyed.
6. Have a brain workout - this game tests how well you can remember customers' names and faces, and deliver the correct food/drink to each customer.
7. Chimp Challenge - in this game, pretend to be a chimpanzee, and see if you can remember who is your friend and who is your enemy.
8. Take a detailed quiz to find out more about your own learning style. We did this at the beginning of the year, but I'm sure it's more relevant now!
9. Learn about how scientists are trying to make "artificial vision" possible.
10. Do some research of your own on "mind control technology" or "thought controlled software".
11. Do some research of your own on brain anomalies, disorders, and unusual conditions, or other mental health topics. Are you interested in learning more about giftedness? Autism? Musical prodigies? Seizure disorders? Alzheimer's Disease?
12. Do some research on your own on other topics related to the nervous system, such as hearing, vision correction, multiple sclerosis....?

Friday 5/4
1. Finish annotating the diagrams from Wednesday in your notebook. Draw labels for your blank heart diagram and draw the path the blood takes. For help, look at the diagram on page 542 of your textbook.
2. Add this diagram to your notebook, and annotate it with notes about blood vessels. Use page 544 in your textbook. Do you know the difference between veins, arteries, and capillaries?
3. How is blood pressure measured, and what does blood pressure mean? Try creating your own understanding of this topic, by googling "blood pressure for kids" or "how does a blood pressure cuff work?". Find at least one diagram, and record notes to demonstrate what you have learned.
4. Now, move on to the section 2 box in your notebook. Insert this diagram into you notebook:
What is blood made of? What is the role of each of the 4 components of blood?
5. Learn about blood type and how transfusions work. Use this diagram:

Making a wordle is a great way to analyze a bit of text. The larger the words are, the more frequently they are found in that text. You can make one to preview your reading, and it will help you think about the big ideas, vocabulary that will be used, and details that will support the big ideas. You can use it to analyze your own writing, and see if you are using the same words over and over again. You can paste this wordle into your digital notebook if you would like. This week we will be learning about circulation.
Here is a digital notebook template you may choose to use this week. I think you're really going to like it! But, of course, you don't HAVE to use it. You can use an analog notebook instead (that's one of the old fashioned kinds, with paper...). :-)

"Perfect World Instructions"
1. Complete your conclusion on your Digestion and Nutrition Prezi.
2. Paste the text of your conclusion into a microsoft Word document.
3. Check the reading level of you conclusion. Edit your conclusion by adding detail and more specific language until the readability is at least 10th grade, and you have at least 200 words. I know that sounds high, but science vocabulary words make the readability automatically higher.
4. Copy your new conclusion and paste it into your prezi, in a NEW text box. I want to see both conclusions - the before and the after.
5. Go to Wordle.net and create a wordle from your conclusion. Paste your conclusion into the box, and generate an image you are happy with. To get it into your prezi, you need to save it as a jpg first. To do that, press the button on your keyboard "Prt Sc" and then open up PowerPoint. On a new blank slide, press "Ctrl" and "v" at the same time to paste your screen shot on the Ppt slide. Crop the image and enlarge it. When it looks good, "Save As" and choose jpg as the file format. Now you are ready to upload it into your prezi.
"Plan B Instructions"
1. Write a conclusion for your unit on nutrition and digestion. If you can't get on a computer, write it on paper. Use a textbook if you need something to refer to and can't log in to your prezi. Here is the prompt, as it was included in the template for your prezi: "Please reflect on this project and your own learning. Did you meet the learning goals? Do you feel your work is Advanced, Proficient, or Partially Proficient? Please explain. How will you benefit from what you have learned about nutrients and digestion in your day-to-day life? Do you have any new questions for further study?"
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: We are dissecting frogs??
A: Only if you want to. First come, first served. The first 20 kids to bring me a blue note signed by a parent will be allowed to stay after school on May 11. Kids can ride the 3:10 bus, or be picked up by a parent.
Q: What is on the final?
A: 5 vocab words from each chapter we have studied this year. Physical Science Chapter 3, Earth Science chapters 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and Life Science chapters 1, 2, 3, 9, 10, 14, 17, 18. I will pick the 5 words I would expect EVERY 7th grader to now own as part of their vocabulary. For example, I would pick estivation, but not pharyngeal pouches. You can go through your words and throw out anything really hard.
Q: What can I use to study if I lost my vocab cards?
A: Go to quizlet.com and search for a stack on the chapter you are missing. For example, search "Glencoe Life Science Chapter 17." I guarantee someone has already made some.
Q: What if I wasn't here for part of 7th grade?
A: You were in 7th grade somewhere, right? (-; This is an end-of-7th-grade assessment, and all 7th graders need to take it.

Nutrients and Digestion
I made a template for this unit's digital notebook. You will need to save a copy of this template prezi and change its name to make it YOUR digital notebook. I will update this post as I fix some errors, so refresh often. (-:
I think what you have to do is click the link under the prezi. When it takes you to this template at Prezi.com, you will see "save a copy". Log in and do that. Save a copy. But RENAME IT so it says "[yourfakename]'s Nutrients and Digestion Digital Notebook". Now share the code with me - tnorton@plattecanyonsd1.org. Now begin working! (-:
Here are some resources you are welcome to use:
The text book. It is chapter 18.
Search for videos, animated diagrams, infographics, interactive tutorials...
Use some of these links I have gathered over the years:

Hey guys! Sorry I can't be with you today - meetings all day. So you're on your own today. I bet you have some questions about how to proceed with your Bones and Muscles project. Hopefully this post will help give you some direction, but if all else fails, don't panic! You can always just do vocabulary for chapter 17, and start reading/outlining the chapter. I will touch base with you tomorrow and give some more guidance if you are struggling.
Here's my thought. I'd like you to learn at least 60% of what is covered in Chapter 17. You need to also learn at least 15 new bones (start with the basic ones if you don't already know them). The other 40% of your learning will be activities of your own choosing. You will need to make a plan for your own learning this week. What 60% of the book will you commit to learning, and what will you be doing for the other 40%? At some point today, please leave a comment on this post, sharing your goals. If you are struggling with what goals to set, go ahead and see what the other students have left, and use that for inspiration.
You will use Prezi to chart your learning goals, progress, and activities. This is your digital notebook. Also, it's an experiment. Let's see what we can do with this! At the end of this period, please see if you can share your prezi with me by clicking the "share together" link and emailing me the code. My email address is tnorton@plattecanyonsd1.org.
Here are some of the resources I have used in past years, teaching about bones and muscles. Feel free to use any of these as a starting point.

Now, explore some of these websites about reptiles and dinosaurs. You do not have to do them in order. Pick what looks interesting and dig deep. PLEASE no youtube today. We don't have the bandwidth.
Write a summary of your learning to turn in at the end of class. If you find broken links or additional good resources, let me know and I will edit this post.
A good, detailed article about characteristics of reptiles, written at a middle school reading level.

The second of these two videos is the one I showed in class, but both are fascinating examples of biology and technology joining forces to advance robotics technology as well as biological sciences. Very cool!

Detective Work
Some friend and I have been debating on the identity of this plant sample, found near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and need your help to settle this once and for all. One of us says it is a moss, another insists it is a club moss, and the third claims it is not a plant at all, but a lichen.
Your job is to collect observations about this plant, using whatever tools you wish, and do some research online to help you determine which is the best way to classify this organism. Then you will write a letter to me, in a business letter format, explaining your results. You should give detailed reasons for your decision, citing online sources. You will probably need to do some basic research on all three of these types or organisms, so you can make the best decision. Look for information about their physical characteristics, reproductive cycles, and other plants the specimen is related to. It would also be very helpful if you could include pictures, diagrams, or any other visually pertinent information. If you believe your sample is comprised of more than one species, you should explain that too.
Here is a form to help you with the layout of your letter. http://teacher.scholastic.com/lessonplans/format.pdf
Here is a rubric to help you score your letter. Please print it out and staple it to your letter when you are ready to turn it in.
Good luck!

Lesson for Thursday 2/23
Hey kids - sorry I couldn't make it today! The roads were HORRIBLE down here in Littleton. )-: I figured I owed it to everyone NOT to run Mrs. Risenhoover's car into a ditch and break my other leg trying to hobble through the snow on crutches.
So, it's been a goofy week. I decided to postpone the test until next week so we can review together tomorrow. It doesn't make any sense to do the test tomorrow if we've only had basically one day together this week. I knew you wouldn't mind. (-;
Today, please spend some time finishing your outline if you need to, and look at the websites in the post right below this one. There are section review quizzes and additional resources if you are ready for an extension activity.
Go ahead and leave a comment on this post or send me an email if you have any questions or need help, or if you find some useful resources you want me to add to the blog post. My email address is tnorton@plattecanyonsd1.org.
